秋の味／A Taste of Autumn

 

南カリフォルニア州では比較的「秋」が短いですが、秋は私の大好きな季節です。カリフォルニア州は勿論一年中夏というわけではないですが、夏と秋の風景の区別は曖昧です。例えば、空が青く晴れているビーチや近所の写真を見ると、夏と秋とではほとんど同じです。

 

南カリフォルニア州に一番植えられている木は、暑く乾いた気候に強い種類であるため、多くは葉を落とさないもの、また豪華な紅葉もありません。20メートルのヤシの木から葉が全て一斉に落ちてきたらどうしよう？強い風で大きなヤシの葉が1枚落ちてきても怖いです。

 

北の山に行けば紅葉がありますが、私の家の近所では紅葉といえば窓の外よりも、グリーティングカード等の方でより多く見ている気がします。また、カリフォルニア州の一番有名な木であるセコイアデンドロンを見るために、毎年何千人もの観光客が来ますが、セコイアデンドロンはエバグリーン（常緑樹）です。日本の紅葉狩りと違って、観光客はセコイアデンドロンの印象的な大きさや存在感を実感する為に来るのです。

       

最近、県庁前の道の木々が紅葉しています。朝仕事に行くときに通ると、時々風で紅葉が舞い降りています。どんなに普通な朝でも、その風景を見るとちょっとワクワクします。（でも歩道の掃除が大変でしょう！）黄金色が綺麗で、葉が軽いため長く空中を漂っているように見えるため、私は銀杏の葉が大好きです。

 

カリフォルニア州にいた頃から、秋は大好きな季節です。適度な涼しさで、かわいいセーターコーデを着ることができて、店が出すアップルスパイスやパンプキン味の期間限定商品が美味しい季節です。（日本ではお芋が期間限定商品の味の一つとなっていて少々驚きましたが、なかなか美味しいです！マロニエ味（トチノキの実）も好きです。）

 

サン・ディエゴの近くの山の町ジュリアン町では、秋の風景もパイのベーカリーも有名です。地域の名産物と言えると思います。私もパイやタルト等を作るのは大好きです！オーブンが日本の普通のキッチンにないことには驚きましたが、この季節だからこそオーブントースターでも頑張りたいです。私の経験だと、アメリカの秋は「ベーキングの季節」です。フルーツ、パンプキン等の時期で、夏にオーブンを使うと家が暑すぎますが、秋にオーブンを使うと家が暖かくなり、美味しく懐かしい匂いがあふれます。私の大好きな秋デザートはパンプキンパイとパイ皮のあるお菓子みたいなピーカンパイです。

 

日本では「読書の秋」という言葉がよく使われるらしいです。私も宇都宮での生活に慣れてきたため、最近は本をたくさん読んでいます。ちょっとだけヒーターを使って、ベッドで漫画、ミステリー小説、歴史本を読みながらくつろぐのが大好きです。

A Taste of Autumn

 

Although 'Autumn' is comparatively short in Southern California, it’s one of my favorite seasons. Of course California isn’t summer all year round, but the scenery doesn’t change all that much between summer and autumn in many areas. For example, if you were looking at a photo of a beach or a neighborhood on a sunny clear day, it would be hard to tell if it was summer or autumn.

 

In Southern California, the most-planted trees are ones that can survive well in a hot and dry climate, which means that most of them either don’t drop their leaves, or don’t have a very dramatic color change. Can you imagine if palm leaves all just fell off at once from the top of a 60-foot tree? Just one falling off in a high wind is scary…

 

There are colored leaves in the mountains to the north, but in my area, I seemed to see more autumn leaves in greeting cards than in real life. Also, although thousands of tourists come every year to see the most famous trees in California, the Giant Redwoods, they are actually evergreen trees. Unlike leaf viewing sites in Japan, people come to experience the vast size and presence of the Giant Redwoods.

 

Recently, the trees on the road leading up to the Prefecture Government have been changing color. Sometimes leaves will be drifting down in the wind as I walk to work in the morning. Even if it's a totally ordinary morning, this view makes it a little exciting. (But it must be so much work to clean up the sidewalks!) My favorite are the ginkgo leaves, because of their pretty gold color and how long they drift in the wind since they’re so light.

 

I loved autumn when I was living in California as well. It’s the perfect cool temperature so I can wear outfits with cute sweaters and coats, and the seasonal limited items in apple spice or pumpkin flavor are delicious. (I was surprised to find that sweet potato is a seasonal flavor in Japan but it was really good! I liked the chestnut flavored limited sweets too.)

 

The town of Julian, near San Diego, is famous for its pie bakery and its autumn scenery. I suppose you could call it a regional specialty. I also love baking pies and tarts! I was a bit surprised that Japanese kitchens rarely have ovens, but since it's the season I want to give it a shot with my countertop toaster oven. In my experience, autumn in America is kind of the ‘Baking Season’. Pumpkins and fruit are in season, and while using the oven in summer the house would get uncomfortably hot, in autumn it fills the house with warmth and tasty smells. My favorite autumn desserts are pumpkin pie and pecan pie, which is basically candy with a crust.

 

In Japan, I often see the word ‘Reading Autumn (Dokusho no Aki/読書の秋)’. I'm also reading a lot of books lately now that I am more settled in to life in Utsunomiya. I love running the heater just enough for the perfect temperature and curling up in bed with a manga, mystery novel, or history book.
