夏の音／Summer Sounds

 

 

カリフォルニア州の夏が暑いことは有名ですが、今年の栃木の暑さにはとても驚きました！特に、慣れない湿気が大変でした。私にとって南カリフォルニア州の空気は乾燥しすぎていますが、日本の湿気にはちょっとショックを受けました。湿度の高い天気が続くと、カリフォルニア州で一番すきだったライム・きゅうり味のスポーツドリンクが飲みたくなります。。。

 

さらに驚いたことは、栃木県とカリフォルニア州では聞こえる夏の音が違うことです。

 

最初にびっくりした夏の音は、セミです。

 

私は学生のころたくさんのアニメを見たため、アニメの夏の場面でよく使われるセミの鳴き声は聞いたことがありました。留学していたときも、セミが比較的少ないところでしたが、夏にはセミの声を聞いていました。そのため、十分慣れているはずでしたが、栃木に住んでから「あっ、セミは本当にいるんだ」「あっ、セミは本当にこんなにすごい音がするんだ」と改めて実感しました。

 

アメリカでもセミは夏の生き物ですが、私の出身地のカリフォルニア州にほとんどいませんでした。アメリカでは、セミは東部や南部に多く、特に、毎年ではなく十数年毎に生まれるセミが多いため（日本語で「周期セミ」と呼ぶらしい。）、日本のような季節のシンボルではありません。

 

次にびっくりした夏の音は、雨です。

 

もちろん、カリフォルニア州に雨が降らない訳ではありません。私の町には谷やキャニオンが多く、雨がたくさん降ると恐ろしくなる場合もあります。カリフォルニア州には「雨が一粒降ると、カリフォルニア州出身者は運転のやり方すら忘れてしまう」という冗談があります。私の周りの人たちはもちろん運転テクニックはしっかりしているのですが（親戚や知り合いが読む可能性がありますのでこう言わなくちゃいけません）、いつも晴れている青空が当たり前になっているので、小雨でも慌てるドライバーが多く、本当の大雨が降ると高速道路などは本当に恐ろしくなります。

 

カリフォルニア州、特に南カリフォルニア州では、そのような雨は秋から冬の天気であり、夏にはほとんど晴れていて、乾燥した風が吹くのが一般的です。私は、夏の雨、そしてこんなによく降る雨には慣れていないため、日本では今でもよく傘を忘れてしまい後悔します。外に出ている間急に降られると悔しいけど、家でお茶を飲んだり本を読んだりしているときに雨の音が聞こえてくると、とてもリラックスした気分になります。

 

最後のびっくりした夏の音は、雷です。

 

雷は、南カリフォルニア州の夏にも栃木県の夏にもある現象ですが、栃木の方が多くてそしてもっとすごい音がします。私は夜間でも、深い眠りの為に雷の音をスピーカーで流すことを習慣にしているほど、雷の音が好きです。でも、アメリカの家と違ってアパートの一番上の4階に住んでいるので、窓や壁が揺れる気がするほどの音の響きが怖いこともあります。

 

 

Summer Sounds

 

California is known for its hot summers, but I was still shocked by how hot it got in Tochigi this year!　I especially struggled with the high humidity, since I’m not used to that where I’m from. I feel like Southern California air is too dry for me, but Japanese humidity was a lot to handle. When there's high humidity I keep wanting to drink my favorite lime-cucumber flavor sports drink from back in California…

 

Another surprise was how different the sounds of summer are in Tochigi compared to California.

 

The first sound that surprised me was cicada calls.

 

Since I watched a lot of anime while I was a student, I had heard the cicada sound effects often used in anime during summer scenes. And while I was an exchange student, I heard them in summer, even though I lived in a place with relatively few cicadas. Therefore, I thought I was totally used to it, but after moving to Tochigi I realized “Oh, wow, there really are cicadas” and “Wow, cicadas really do make this much noise”.

 

Cicadas are a summer phenomenon in America as well, but they are basically nonexistent in my home state of California. There are a lot of cicadas in the eastern and southern parts of the US, though since most American cicadas only appear every several years (these are called ‘periodic cicadas’) instead of every year, they aren’t a seasonal symbol in the same way they are in Japan.

 

The next surprising summer sound is rain.

 

Of course it rains in California. There are many valleys and canyons in the town where I’m from, so it can be dangerous in heavy rains. There’s a joke in California that ‘if one drop of rain falls, Californians completely forget how to drive’. Everyone around me is very careful about traffic safety, of course (I have to write this since one of my family or friends might read this article), but since people get used to taking the constant clear blue skies for granted, a lot of drivers are taken by surprise by a small drizzle, so if there’s a real rainstorm the highways can become dangerous.

 

However, in California, especially Southern California, that kind of rain is part of fall and winter weather, and in summer it is generally clear with dry winds. Since I'm not used to rain in summer, especially rain falling this often, so in Japan I often find myself without an umbrella and full of regrets. It's frustrating to suddenly get drenched with rain while I’m out of the house, but if I’m at home drinking tea and reading a book, the sound of rain is very relaxing.

 

The last surprising summer sound is thunder.

 

Thunder is a summer phenomenon both in Southern California and in Tochigi, but it happens much more in Tochigi and the sound is much more impressive. I like the sound of thunder, and I even use a speaker playing thunderstorm sounds during the night to help me sleep deeply. But since my American house was 1 story and in Tochigi I am living 4 floors up at the top of my apartment building, so it can be scary when the thunder is loud enough that it feels like the windows and walls are shaking.
