栃木県のみなさま、はじめまして！

私はメーガン・ハバーストロー (Megan Haberstroh) と申します。名前がとても長いので、よく「メグ」と呼ばれています。私は10月11日から栃木県の国際課に国際交流員として勤めています。

この際、すこし自己紹介や出身地紹介をさせていただきます。

私はアメリカの西海岸にあるカリフォルニア州から来ました。ふるさとはロス・アンジェルスやディズニーランドから車で2時間半ほど南にあるサン・ディエゴ・カウンティ（San Diego County）です。（いつもこの比較をしているのに、ディズニーランドに行ったことが一度もありません。。。）

カウンティの首都であるサン・ディエゴ市は大きな市ですが、カウンティは山、海辺、農場、小さな町も含めて、バラエティ豊かな地域です。移民もたくさん住んでいるところでもあり、メキシコ料理の隣にタイ料理、インド料理の隣に東アフリカ料理などのように、たくさんのおいしい国際色豊かな店が並んでいます。年間を通じて快晴なのでハイキングやサーフィンなどのアウトドア活動が人気で、私もハイキングが大好きです。

私はサン・ディエゴ・カウンティにある小さな町の一つ、ラ・メサ町から来ました。「ラ・メサ（La Mesa）」はスペイン語で「机」という意味があり、名前の通り、平らな丘の上に作られた町です。町にいても小さな峡谷がたくさんあるので自然を感じられ、夜明けと日暮れはとても美しいです。

カリフォルニア州、とくに南カリフォルニア州は、夏がとても長くて暑く、雨はめったに降りません。アメリカを出発したころは、まだ気温が25℃ぐらいまで上る日も珍しくなかったので、栃木県に到着して秋の寒さにちょっとびっくりしました。でも、アメリカではあまり着る必要がなかったけれど大好きなセーターやニットを集めるいい機会だと思っています。

私は中学生のころから日本語や日本文化に興味をもち始めました。初めてのきっかけは少女漫画とアニメでしたが、私はSFX（特別撮影）の工夫や作り方がとても好きで、怪獣映画や仮面ライダーなどのヒーローものも好きになりました。興味が深くなるほどもっと理解したい気持ちが強まって、日本語の勉強に更に熱心取り組みました。今、宝塚歌劇団もとても大好きですが、他にも、日本の伝統的な演劇からアニメを舞台化したミュージカルまで、日本の舞台文化をいろいろ経験したいと思います。

前に京都に留学したこともありますが、関東に滞在したことがなかったので、関東や栃木県独自の自然、観光スポット、食文化などを経験したいです。栃木県内には大谷資料館などの仮面ライダーに出ている撮影現場もあるので観光地めぐりができることをとても楽しみにしています。また、食文化では、私は果物が大好きなので「いちごの国」と呼ばれている栃木県にいられることは夢のようでラッキーです！

 

このように、県民のみなさまと交流できる機会を得られてうれしいです！

これからも栃木県での経験とアメリカのことをいろいろ書かせていただきたいので、読んでいただければ幸いです。

Hi! I’m Meg♡ (Megan Haberstroh)

 

Hello to everyone in Tochigi Prefecture!

My name is Megan Haberstroh. However, since that’s a long name, a lot of people call me “Meg”. I have been working as a Coordinator for International Relations in Tochigi Prefecture’s International Division since the middle of October.

I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a bit about myself and where I’m from.

I am from the state of California, on the West Coast of the United States. My hometown is San Diego County, which is about 2 hours’ drive south of Los Angeles or Disneyland by car. (But even though I’m using this for the comparison, I’ve never been to Disneyland…)

The County’s capitol city of San Diego is a very big city, but in the County there are mountains, beaches, farms, and smaller towns, so the region is full of variety. San Diego also has a large immigrant community, so lots of delicious international restaurants are everywhere: you might see a Thai restaurant next to a Mexican restaurant, or an East African restaurant next to an Indian restaurant. Since the weather is fine all year round, outdoor activities like hiking and surfing are popular, and I really like hiking.

I am from one of the smaller towns in the county, called La Mesa. La Mesa means ‘The Table’ in Spanish, and just like you might think from the name, it is a town built on the flat top of a hill. Even in the town, there is still a sense of nature because of the many small canyons, and the sunrise and sunset are very beautiful.

In California, particularly Southern California, the summers are very long and hot, and rain is rare. Around the time I left America, the temperature was still commonly reaching around 25℃, so when I arrived in Tochigi I was surprised at the cold autumn. However, I think of it as a great opportunity to collect sweaters and knitwear, which I love even though I didn’t often need them in America.

I have been into Japanese language and culture since around the time I was in middle school. I first discovered it because of girls’ manga and anime. However, since I love special-effects filming techniques and how they are created, I also became a fan of Japanese monster movies and superhero shows like Kamen Rider. As my interest deepened, I dove into studying Japanese with a passion so that I could understand things better. Currently I also love the Takarazuka Revue company, and I would like to experience many examples of Japan’s stage culture, from its traditional theatrical arts to musical adaptations of anime.

While I lived in Kyoto for a study abroad program in the past, I have never stayed in the Kanto region, so I want to experience the nature, sightseeing locations, and food culture that can only be found in Kanto and Tochigi Prefecture. In Tochigi Prefecture there are locations such as the Oya History Museum that have been used as filming sites for Kamen Rider and other shows, so I am excited to go sightseeing! And when it comes to food culture, I love fruit, so being able to be in a place like the “Strawberry Kingdom” Tochigi is like a dream come true! I feel so lucky!

 

I am so happy to have this chance to interact with everyone in Tochigi Prefecture!
