As a trusted partner which supports the transportation industry and myriad transportation needs, Isuzu Motors Limited contributes to the creation of full and productive lives.
In this issue, we visit Isuzu's plant in Tochigi City to interview Kenji Yamada, a senior staff member in the Department of General Affairs & Human Resources.
Our company, which has the longest history of any of the Japanese vehicle manufacturers, specializes in the development and manufacture of commercial vehicles and diesel engines.
With an aim to be a global leader in our field, we are pursuing our business while aiming to become the world's premier manufacturer of commercial vehicles and diesel engines.
This plant manufactures engines for large, medium and small-sized commercial vehicles, industrial engines (construction machinery engines, marine engines, and power source engines), and parts for under carriages (axle-related parts). Engines manufactured in this plant are either supplied to our vehicle production plants located in other prefectures, directly shipped to construction machinery manufacturers or exported all around the world.
In terms of logistics, since expressways are frequently used for shipments and parts procurement, we have greatly benefited from the recent improvements made to local traffic infrastructure. Equally beneficial is the remarkably convenient accessibility that this location enjoys.
Additionally, since Tochigi Prefecture experiences comparatively few natural disasters, it makes for an ideal environment for manufacturing.
Nevertheless, we have devised and implemented risk management procedures to respond to any earthquakes that might occur. If an earthquake of a magnitude greater than three takes place, all production lines are stopped so that inspections can be made to check for malfunctions. With production lines being the lifeline of our plant, and since even small failures can affect our products and their quality, we believe that it is critical to have a through response to any potential disaster.
From this reason, we believe this to be an excellent location not only from our point of view, but also from the perspective of our partners.
All engines used in Isuzu trucks sold in Japan are integrally made in this Tochigi plant. Some of our exported products are also equipped with engines manufactured in this plant.
Recently, electronic components which may arise malfunctions caused by radio waves are increasingly being used. This plant is equipped with testing equipment which generates every kind of radio waves. Among Japanese manufacturers, with the exception of research laboratories, this equipment is only available in this Tochigi plant. When new products are developed, they are thoroughly examined and tested by the equipment in the radio wave room.
Additionally, this plant is the only plant among our many plants within and outside Japan which is equipped with a forging facility manufacturing forged parts such as a camshaft used in engines.
We provide plant tours for elementary, junior high, and high school students. For the latter group, we assist their job-hunting efforts by informing them of the various career opportunities available to them at our plant.
As for other activities, periodic cleaning of the plant facilities and surrounding is routinely performed.
Concerning with environmental issues, ISO 14001 approval has been obtained, and its requirements guide the zero-emission and recycling policies we promote. For the recycling, by keeping in mind that there is a limit for natural resources, we establish a corporate system not only to improve the functionality of the plant itself but also to raise awareness of environmental issues in each individual employee.
Because we are a company of "Monozukuri", we make great efforts to limit noise and to ensure the quality of the water which is drained from our facilities. While environmental committees manage company-wide policy, each employee strives to ensure that their daily production activities are performed in an environmentally sensitive manner.
Since most plant employees are Tochigi Prefecture residents, we are proud to support and contribute to the social and economic wellbeing of the community.
Working together with the people of Tochigi, we are honored to have the opportunity to make engines of the highest quality for the domestic and international markets while doing our part to protect and preserve the environment.
