As a global excellent company creating "New Functions" of plastics, and contributing the development of society, Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd. is delivering a great number of achievements by the use of advanced technologies. In this issue, we visited Utsunomiya Plant in Kiyohara Industrial Park and interviewed with Kenji Takayama, Plant manager.
"Bakelite" in our company name, was the oldest phenolic resin developed and named by Dr.Baekeland in the united states in 1907. The first industrialized phenolic resin business had been succeeded by our company and served it as the origin of the company's name.
In Utsunomiya plant there are manufacturing and R&D divisions. Utsunomiya plant, which started its operation in 1984, is a high technology plant in manufacturing information and telecommunications related materials.
This plant manufactures materials such as Liquid epoxy resins for encapsulation of semiconductors, paste for die bonding, coating resin for semiconductor wafers, and semiconductor adhesive tapes etc. which required in a manufacturing process of semiconductors equipped on various products such as mobile phones, PC, TV, and automobile.
The R&D division, named as Information & Telecommunications Material Laboratories, is a research and development center for information and telecommunications with providing a total solution of advanced semiconductor packaging, including material developments, high density mounting, and analysis & evaluations.

In 1980's, we decided to develop in Kiyohara industrial park in order to meet further production increase and business development of company's typical main products of encapsulation materials, SUMICON EME products by considering factors such as within a range of 100 km in the Tokyo metropolitan area, fulfillment of road transportation networks, common processing facilities, green environment facilities, and the largest size of Industrial parks, etc. .

As of today, semiconductors are equipped on every electronics equipment. Our encapsulation materials, SUMICON EME products, is maintaining world No.1 position. This Utsunomiya plant is the R & D base of the SUMOKON EME products.
In 1997, we had started a production of the world first production of the positive type photosensitive polymide used at semiconductor manufacturing processes.
A semiconductor wafers coating resin, SUMIRESIN EXEL CRC which features high quality and environmental safety, is becoming the world leading product by meeting customers needs and being highly evaluated from them.
A semiconductor die bonding, SUMIRESIN EXCEL CRM, is also establishing the No.1 position in Japanese market.
As a member of Kiyohara industrial park, we are aiming to contribute for the development of community and the industrial park with participating to activities on safety traffics, environment maintenances, and cleaning activities so on.
We accept internship students every year from universities and technical colleges.
Also we issue "Environmental & Social Report" every year, reporting our actions including environmental measures and human rights and educational trainings.
We believe and hope that succeeding in operation and development of our business leads to a growth of Tochigi Prefecture and Utsunomiya City. To that end, we believe our attitude toward challenging on hard workings and doing our best every day are very important.
We feel that Tochigi provides an excellent environment for the foundation of working, with having a plenty of cultural and historical places, and hot springs etc., and further with a good access to the Tokyo metropolitan area by improving transportation infrastructure.
