In this issue, we visited Packaging Division Corrugated Board Kanto Division in Tochigi plant, and interviewed with Yasuyuki Hara. General manager of General Administration Department.

Oyama plant manufactures and markets corrugated boards and cartons.
[Note]
1)*corrugated board; means flat sheet materials before processing cartons. 2)*corrugated carton; means printed or formed cartons by corrugated boards.
This plant started operations in 1980 to deliver products to our customers located in Tochigi and Ibaraki prefectures efficiently.
Three main reasons for the development in here are location environments, customers, and labor forces.
For the location environment aspects, key points are well-arranged road networks and site location at the center of the Kitakanto region where a large demand of corrugated boards are expected.
For the customers aspects, not so far from many customer's factories and a large production areas of vegetables (green groceries).
Availability of excellent employees also another big reason.
Products of corrugated boards are a must-have item in society, but because the value per unit volume is low, it is not profitable to have a long haul of transportations.
Specifically, the maximum delivery distance should be within a range of 100 km from the manufacturing point. Well-arranged road network and a closer distance to demand center were our decisive factor to locate here in Tochigi..
"Kei-Haku-Tan(Sumi=CO2)-Sho "(reduction of CO2).
This unique catch phrase of our environmental activities derived from Japanese common phrase of "Kei-Haku-Tan-Sho", in English, "Lighter, Thinner and less CO2 in corrugated board manufacturing"
For the emerging needs of preventing the global warming, Rengo Co., Ltd. are working hard to this subject through packaging business.
Corrugated board consists of three main parts.
Corrugated board = Liner (top board) + Inner core (corrugated board between liners) + Liner (back board)
Currently, A-Flute board of 5mm thickness dominates in Japan.
Generally, the strength of the corrugated board is related with the thickness (height of flute). So thicker board means stronger.
By our efforts on researches, 1 mm thinner, C-Flute of 4mm thickness corrugated board was developed with having an equal strength as A-Flute. Lower in height of flute consumes less paper. Thinner in a thickness realizes a lighter weight together also. As a result, CO2 emissions in transportation and storage can be reduced drastically by improving transport efficiency.
Also, newly opened plant in Fukushima in 2010 is equipped with 9,000 sheets of solar panels which can generate all electrical power supply required for daytime operations of the plant.
Tochigi plant also changed a type of fuels of boilers from heavy oils to LNG gas for reduction of CO2 emissions.
By promoting C-Flute corrugated product which features environmental friendliness with keeping equivalent strength to our clients, we are promoting environment preservation through our marketing.
This approach provides effective impacts, because many consumers look outer packaging of products at their first sight, not products themselves packed inside.
As of today, our company's total reduction ratio of CO2 has reached to 28 % from the figure in 1990. We are setting a target of 32 % reduction by 2020, and further 50 % reduction by 2050.
Rengo group companies are striving to reduce CO2 by promoting a project, so called "Kei-Haku-Tan-Sho ".
We participate not only cleaning projects of local areas, but also Nikko-Suginamiki cleaning project every year.
We also carry out a plant tour for elementary schools, and free corrugated board are provided for events or for monuments at the local cultural festivals.
You may know a book titled "Gakken Manga-De-Yokuwakaru Series-41, Danboru-No-Himitsu".
The book for kids explains about corrugated board by applying easy readable cartoons. We fully supported for creation of the book to let as many people as possible know the facts that the eco-friendly corrugated board is featuring a recycled rate of almost 100%. A total sum of 25,000 copies of the book had been donated to all elementary schools in Japan.
The name of "DAMBORU" in Japanese was created by Sadajiro Inoue, the founder of our company. We are the first company who manufactured corrugated board in Japan. A history of corrugated board in Japan means also a history of our company. It is the pride of our company as a leading company and a pioneer of the corrugated board.
As of today, as "a packaging solution company" who provides solutions not only for corrugated board but also all about packaging. We are supporting people for better living by optimizing a flow of products in a distribution process.
Packaging, including corrugated board, requires human intelligences. No machine can provides technologies and ideas for solving various problems on packaging, only people can do it.
We commit further to contributing for society trough creating human and environment-friendly packaging. Also we strive to developing our experiences of corrugated board production and our cutting-edge technologies.
